Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care

    Childbirth

Michael and I watched this very interesting movie about the whole childbirth business in America.  So interesting.  Since then, I've been reading Pushed by Jennifer Block.  It's making me more and more interested in doing home births completely natural (with a midwife), though, I think for this first one we're going to stick with our OB and do it at the hospital.  We do trust this doctor, and he seems to have a low frequency of C-sections.  But it still might be a challenge keeping from having all of the routine interventions.  We're praying that we'll deliver during the month of June (due date June 27th) because the only birth center in town is closing it's doors as of June 30.  After that we'll have to deliver at the hospital downtown which is a lot less "family friendly."

Anyway, all you ladies out there should check out this film, if you haven't already.  It is beautiful!

Once again, you've linked to a really interesting book!  :)  While I don't need this info now, I may read the book anyway, since it looks so interesting--there's the scientist in me wanting to know more about it all.  I never knew there was so much behind doctors and hositals and giving birth.  :)  Right now, I'm thinking about whether or not to use the pill form of birth control.  I know you would be opposed to it from the Catholic point of view--I don't have a moral opposition to it, but a very strong health-related reluctance to use it.  I may try them for a month or two and see what it does to my system...I've been charting myself using the fertility awareness method (FAM) (same as NFP but not from the RC viewpoint), so I may go back to that.  Anyway...I'm very glad to be able to ask questions, research, and make informed decisions about healthcare...rather than just going along with the flow.  Thanks for the links you've posted this year to help with all of that!  How are you and Michael doing?  How's grad school?  How's the pregnancy coming along?  :)  Hope you have a good evening!

On the whole birth control thing, I know exactly what you mean about the health issues.  Before I ever even thought of the pill with the "Catholic" understanding, I couldn't imagine that using a pill to regulate such a natural bodily function could be a good thing.  Now I'm hearing about birth control pills that limit your periods to four a year!  SOOO messed up!  And of course, there's the question: "do these things have known links to cancer"...some studies say yes.  And can it cause infertility later down the road...yup.  So, all of those things are reasons why I wouldn't go on the pill.  Too scary.

Baby is doing good.  Kicking away.  It's a lot of fun!

marcy! I'm excited for you!!! i had Jason naturally and he was born in a jacuzzi. he came right out into the water. :) I'd like to do a homebirth, too, but it was actually CHEAPER for us to go to the hospital than to hire a midwife...I hope you can have the baby in the birthing center! by the way, do you know if you're having a girl or a boy? or did you decide to wait?

Yes, I am exctied (in response to facebook) but it feels like I have such a long way to go.  I am glad you are nearing the home stretch.  Thanks for the info on the movie.  It is now on my netflix queue.  I have a feeling we are on the same page about most birthing issues.  What do you think about the vitamin K shot they give infants in the hospital?
  • Marzipantz

@sarah_knerr - I actually dont' know much about the vitamin K shot at all...do you?  I've heard that some people refuse it, and most pediatricians will tell you not to refuse it, but I haven't actually heard the arguments on this one.
